What you choose
- Blocks. Three blocks. The bottom block is always Large (80 mm), because the base has its shape. The middle and top blocks are Small (58 mm), Medium (72 mm) or Large (80 mm). Every block has its own colour.
- Signature. Spine: a narrow slot in every block shows the black pole as one line down the front. Slice: one flat cut through the front corner of every block, all on the same plane. None: the plain soft block.
- Between the blocks. Floating: a black ring of 14 mm between the blocks, so each block seems to hang in the air. Touching: the blocks sit directly on each other.
- Hole in the block. Centred: the blocks stand on one line. Off-centre 10 mm: each block sits 10 mm to one side of the pole. Turn a block to make it step out toward the books, away from them or to the side.
- Lock. Cap nut: a small block that screws onto the pole and clamps the whole stack, so nothing moves. Cross pin: a round bar through the pole above the top block. It stops the blocks lifting off, but it does not clamp them.
- The pole can be at most 220 mm, so very tall mixes are not offered. The page shows the height of your bookend as you build it.
Set and size
- Single: one bookend. Pair: two bookends, the right one the mirror image of the left, so both signatures face the room. Choose the same design for both, or mix and match: each bookend gets its own blocks, colours, signature, spacing, hole and lock.
- Height about 221 mm as shown (Large, Small, Medium, floating, cap nut). Base 190 x 80 mm and 3 mm thin (180 mm with the off-centre hole).
- Every bookend is made to order in our studio in Germany and carries its own number on the base, hidden under the books.
Putting it together
- Lay the base flat, with the long end toward the books.
- Slide the large block down the pole until it sits on the base.
- Drop on a spacer ring (floating only), then the next block. The pole has 12 sides, so each block stays in the turn you give it.
- Repeat for the top block.
- Screw the cap nut on by hand until it stops. With the cross pin, push it through the hole in the pole above the top block.
No tools and no glue. Everything comes apart again, so you can change the order of the blocks.
Material and care
- PLA with a matte stone texture on the blocks. The pole, base and rings are smooth black.
- Dust with a dry, soft cloth. No water, no cleaning agents.
- Keep away from heat: no radiator, no direct summer sun, no hot car. PLA starts to soften at about 52 °C.
Safety
- Not a toy. The rings, the nut and the pin are small parts before assembly. Keep them away from small children and pets.
- An empty bookend without books on the base can tip over when it is pushed. Use it with books on the base.
